Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Showcase Central Georgia , I’m Holly Taylor. Piedmont Orthopaedic Complex is a health care facility with a long standing tradition of excellent service. Piedmont specializes in joint replacement, arthroscopy, physical therapy, sports medicine, podiatry and occupational medicine. Today, Heath Mills will be joining us and we will focus on the physical therapy department at Piedmont Orthopaedic Complex and how they can get you back on the road to recovery after suffering an injury or having surgery.  Hi Heath, thank you for being here.

Heath, could you tell me, Why is Physical Therapy important in the healing process?

The purpose of physical therapy is to help the patient return to an active, pain free lifestyle as quickly as possible. The therapy services provided will be determined by the patient’s specific diagnosis, but, in general, what we do at our clinic is we try to return the patient to a pre-injury level of function by decreasing swelling, decreasing pain, increasing range of motion, strength, balance, gait and working on postural changes if it is a spine injury.

What type of therapies or treatments does your clinic provide?

We provide modalities such as cold and heat therapy, also electrical stimulation and ultrasound and these are used to help promote healing as well as decrease pain and decrease swelling. We also use those in conjunction with therapeutic exercises which are used to help strengthen and increase range of motion of the injured area of the patient and in some cases we also do hands-on therapy such as manual therapy or massage therapy. Manual therapy is used to increase range of motion or joint mobilization and massage therapy is used to help decrease muscle spasms and muscle pain in an injured muscle.

What kind of people could benefit from physical therapy?

Anybody that has an injured with decreased range of motion or decreased strength can benefit from physical therapy.

What are some of the most common injuries that you see?

We treat a gamut of injuries including neck and low back pain, as well as shoulder pain, elbow pain, wrist and hand pain, hip pain, knee pain and foot and ankle pain.

How long does a physical therapy session last?

Each session is designed specifically for the limitations that the patient has upon presentation, but typically right around an hour.

Does a physical therapy session require a prescription from a doctor?

It does, in order for a person to receive physical therapy in the state of Georgia they have to have a written order or prescription from a physician.

Who actually performs the physical therapy for the patient?

In our facility we have licensed physical therapists, certified athletic trainers and a massage therapist. The plan of care for the patient is designed by the physical therapist or the certified athletic trainer and each person at our facility is licensed by the state of Georgia.

Thank you Heath.
